LOS ANGELES, Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- There are only a handful of artists
who have had a song chart Top 5 pop and adult contemporary and Top 40 R&B.
Gino Vannelli is one of them, with 1978's ``I Just Wanna Stop.'' Three
years later, he nearly did it again, with ``Living Inside Myself.''
Renowned for his powerful, sensuous vocal performances as well as an
innovative songwriter and producer, the
Grammy-nominated Vannelli fused jazz, pop and funk like no one else.
The Best Of Gino Vannelli edition of 20th Century Masters/The Millennium
Collection (A&M/UME),
released March 26, 2002, features 12 of his best-selling and best-known
tracks from 1973-1981, including four Top 30 adult contemporary hits, each
digitally remastered.
After signing to A&M, Montreal's Vannelli debuted with the Herb
Alpert-produced Crazy Life (1973),
whose title track is heard on The Best Of Gino Vannelli. Gino and brother
Joe would produce his
subsequent projects (occasionally with brother Ross as well) and Powerful
People (1974) scored with its Top 25 hit ``People Gotta Move'' (also Top 20
AC) and its title track. Earning his first Grammy nomination, Vannelli used
the album to introduce audiences to the newly invented synthesized
keyboard.
It would be four years before he would have his next major hit but his
albums continued to break
boundaries with their lush, cutting edge instrumentation and compositional
quirkiness. Storm At Sunup (1975) included ``Mama Coco''; Gist Of The
Gemini (1976) featured the passionate ``Love Of My Life'' and high-spirited
``Fly Into The Night'' and A Pauper In Paradise (1977) embraced ``One Night
With You.''
In 1978, he enjoyed his greatest commercial triumph, the platinum Brother
To Brother, featuring the
Grammy-nominated ``I Just Wanna Stop'' (#4 pop/#4 AC/#21 R&B), the
irrepressible ``Appaloosa,'' funky ``The River Must Flow'' and supreme
ballad ``Wheels Of Life'' (Top 30 AC). Vannelli also earned his fifth
consecutive Juno award as Canada's Top Male Vocalist.
Moving to Arista, he created his most adventurous album to date with 1981's
Nightwalker. The
soul-searching ballad ``Living Inside Myself'' (#6 pop/#5 AC/#45 R&B)
helped earn him yet another
Grammy nomination. While the recording would be his last big hit, today
Vannelli remains one of adult
contemporary's most enduring and recognizable artists.
The series 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection features new
``best of'' albums from the most significant music artists of the past
century.
